Clothes Essentials

The following photos are my own, taken by me.
If you should know anything about me, it's that shopping is my thing. Going out to get a dress for that upcoming party or new shorts for summer is always the highlight of my week. Yes, shopping can be fun, but a lot of the time it can be stressful too. Between the constantly increasing temperatures and bipolar weather, it can be hard to know what to get every time you go to the mall. Just as well, styles and trends are always changing with each season of the year, so it's inevitable that new clothes end up going in and out of your closet pretty quick. And with the passing of clothes from closet to the arms of your little sister, it's kind of depressing to think you only got one wear out of most of those tops before they went out of style.

From my experience, this ongoing cycle of buying and throwing out made me go insane, and it had gotten to the point where I needed to figure out where I was going wrong. So, I started by stripping my closet of the things I wore once or had bought but never intended on wearing. From there, I could see my problem. With the same types of tops and same types of pants still in my closet, and my colorful and crazily patterned stuff off to the side, I had realized how little of a range I really wore from. Which makes me believe that by spending less money on the crazy shirts you know you won't wear again and spend more money on only the 'essentials' you can build up your closet inventory wisely.

Now this doesn't mean that you can't buy some winter boots or colorful crop top every now and then, because you don't want your closet to only have basic clothes. But by buying tops and pants that can be worn throughout the year, you can save yourself the headache. Because even when it becomes winter time and you need to layer up, having a couple simple shirts and jackets are at the ready from fall and summer. And when summer rolls back around, you can put aside the jackets and take out the essential tops and shorts you already had in your closet.

What do I mean by 'essentials' though? I mean this:

Tops

Tops that I believe are essential for every wardrobe include ones that are basic and have a neutral color palette. A pale pink and grey tank top, a lightweight grey v-neck, and a couple button-ups are some of the tops I have multitudes of in my closet. These shirts are easy to pair with any jacket or accessory, and can be layered effortlessly. But you don't want to go for just any top. When buying your essentials, it's always important to remember to select ones that aren't cheaply made, so that they'll last through plenty of washes.

Pants

When it comes to pants, I always like to have four main styles. These are: a light-wash, dark-wash, white, and a pair of black pants. Whenever there's a sale, or I need to do back to school shopping, I stick to the basics and grab these essentials.

Jackets

With jackets, I like to have plenty of variety. I have my thinner jackets for style, and heavier jackets for cool weather. While it did take me a while to find each jacket, it was worth the search. Good quality jackets that fit your expectations can be hard to find. But once you find the right one, it'll last you a long time.

Shoes

In my opinion, the types of shoes that one will have is solely based on their character. (If you caught that pun - we should be best friends.) Because I'm a very organized person, shopping consists of me choosing shoes that are functional, comfortable, and easy to match with the clothes in my closet.

So for the shoes above, I have my grey adidas and black slip ons for casual wear, and heels and boots for more formal occasions. Yes, I give all these shoes a five star when it comes to matching and comfort level. But what I like most about these shoes is how they are able to dress-up or dress-down an outfit. And with this functionality, you are able to spend less and style more.
